How to Set Business Goals You Will Actually Follow Through On

Home / Blog / How to Set Business Goals You Will Actually Follow Through On

Most business goals set with genuine enthusiasm quietly fade within a few weeks, not because the goal itself was wrong, but because of how it was set in the first place, and what happened, or did not happen, immediately afterward.

Vague Goals Are Easy to Set and Easy to Abandon

"Grow the business this year" gives you nothing concrete to actually act on day to day. A specific, measurable target, a defined number of new clients, a specific revenue figure, gives you something you can genuinely track progress against and know whether you are on pace.

Break Big Goals Into What Happens This Week

An annual goal is too distant to meaningfully guide daily decisions. Breaking it down into quarterly, then weekly targets makes the connection between today's specific actions and the larger goal concrete and immediate, rather than abstract.

Attach a Clear Owner and Deadline to Every Goal

A goal with no specific person responsible for it, and no clear deadline, rarely gets consistent attention. Someone needs to own it directly, even if the whole team contributes to actually achieving it.

Review Progress on a Fixed, Recurring Schedule

Goals set once in January and never revisited until December inevitably drift as circumstances change throughout the year. A regular, brief review, monthly or quarterly, keeps the goal genuinely alive and allows for real course correction along the way.

Fewer Goals, Genuinely Pursued, Beat Many Set and Forgotten

A long list of goals set once with enthusiasm, then never revisited, achieves far less than a small, focused set that is actually reviewed and adjusted consistently throughout the year.

Every business is different. What works for one may not work for another. If you would like help building a goal-setting system that actually sticks, we are always available for a conversation.
